BestBeautyAdvice: SKIN

BestBeautyAdvice has put together a list of the best tips to help you achieve your most beautiful skin.

  • Do not take too many showers or stay in the water for too long. Water has a drying effect on the skin.
  • Always apply moisturizer immediately after getting out of the shower. This is when skin is still moist and will absorb the lotion better.
  • Thick moisturizer does not necessarily mean better. Heavy creams can create a barrier on the surface of your skin and keep it from absorbing moisture.
  • Use a nighttime face lotion. Skin-cell regeneration is slightly faster at night than during the day, so take advantage of your skins receptiveness.
  • Never use too many products at once. This can irritate your skin. Instead, nourish your skin with a nutrient packed moisturizer.
  • Avoid drinking too much coffee or energy drinks because they can be extremely dehydrating. However, caffeine applied topically to your skin has skin-tightening and redness soothing properties which can be perfect for under eye puffiness or rosacea.
  • Avoid harsh scrubs and scrubbing  your skin to often. Generally you should exfoliate around twice a week.
  • Squirt a little lemon juice into your scrub for instant brightening and buffing action.
  • Sun bathing is without a doubt the worst thing you can do to your skin. Using SPF is essential and should be applied every couple of hours.
  • Do not over massage the skin or touch your face too much. Stimulating the skin too much can cause irritation and your hands contain bacteria and oils that can cause breakouts on your face,
  • Although alcohol based toners will dry out your blemishes right away, they will also strip your skin of moisture and send oil glands into overdrive which could possibly worsen your condition. Instead use a toner with the appropriate active ingredient. One that contains lactic acid is good for cysts that appear deep under the skin while salicylic   acid or benzyl peroxide are ideal for minor to moderate breakouts.
  • Allow time for your skin product to start working. Most active ingredients take effect over time, so don’t give up if you don’t see immediate results.
  • To help avoid sleep lines opt for a silk or satin pillowcase.
  • Identify blemish patterns on your face. Look at the way you hold your telephone, whether you sleep more on one side of your face or if you constantly hold your head up with one hand while sitting. These are all things that can cause breakouts.
  • Phone carry extreme amounts of bacteria that can easily be transferred onto your face. Use an alcohol swab or disinfectant to clean your phone as often as possible to avoid breakouts.
  • If you are breaking out, use a deep cleansing mask once a week to rid your skin of impurities and dead skin cells that may cause your pores to clog.
  • If your skin is sensitive or just looking irritated and puffy for some reason, steam a bag of green tea for a minute or two, let it cool down, and dab it over your face. The antioxidants in the tea take down inflammation.
  • Rose and lavender work wonders for calming skin inflammation.
  • Try to avoid turning the water heat up in the shower. Hot water followed by cool, dry air leads to rough skin. To lock in moisture post-shower, pat (do not rub) yourself dry, and apply moisturizer.
  • Prevent dead-skin pileup on your feet by using a pumice stone in the shower. Do not use a razor to remove dead skin because that will only cause more skin to grow back.
  • When waxing at home, apply tooth-numbing cream in the area you plan to wax about half an hour prior to your session. It will temporarily numb the skin, making the experience a little less painful.
  • Olive oil is a great cure for all things dry. For soft cuticles, place your fingers in a bowl of warm olive oil. Olive oil is also a great way to remove waterproof mascara. Put a few drops on a cotton ball and smooth over closed eyes.
  • Avoid streaks by mixing self-tanner with moisturizer before applying. This dilutes the formula so you do not look streaky.
  • To avoid an orangey look with self-tanner, after application, wipe a cotton swab or a damp paper towel across your eyebrows and along your hairline.
  • For extremely soft, smooth lips use your richest eye cream on your lips. Be sure it is a hydrating formula and not a firming lotion, which will cause drying.
  • Avocado is a wonderful moisturizer for skin. Take a ripe avocado and mash it up in a bowl. Slather it all over your body and let it sit for about 20 minutes.
  • To get shiney legs that aren’t too greasy, blend a drop of baby oil into your normal body lotion for extra shine.
  • Slather on a thick layer of diaper-rash cream to heal cracked elbows and feet.
  • If your underarms start to look dry, an easy trick is to exfoliate them with a gentle face scrub.
  • Instead of buying an expensive perfumed body product, you can make your own by pouring a few drops of fragrance into any scent-free lotion.
